My first time trying the Amazing Grass Superfood blend
Overall, the taste was tolerable and the ingredients look pretty healthy. Following my initial taste test, I did further research into the ingredients which I wasn’t familiar with.
Here’s what I learned however, I encourage everyone to do their own research! The food industry in the US is not properly regulated. Although some health food companies are genuine, many manufactures are using the wave of alternative medicine as an opportunity for advertising. Products promoted to health conscious populations may or may not be actually be healthy.
- Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) is not another way to disguise sugar, it’s actually considered to be more like a probiotic. According to an explanation by an expert on the role of carbohydrates in our diet, FOS “is indigestible by our bodies, it gets transported to the large intestine where it feeds microbes and promotes fermentation.”
- Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) is part of a new trend popularizing “pre probiotics”. Pre probiotics may improve gut health by feeding the intestines micro biome, but they may also contribute to abdominal discomfort and allergies. Anyone living with MCAD should be extra careful with the types of food additives. So far I haven’t had any specific reaction to this drink, but that doesn’t mean its completely tolerable since sensitivity levels change over time.
- Apple pectin fiber is another ingridient with both pros and cons. Livestrong.com handled this in an interesting way by describing its benefits and side effects in two separate articles. It’s function as a fiber may cause added discomfort for those living with dysmotility.
